Sometimes you don't need the whole PDF — you just need the words inside it. Maybe you want to copy a few paragraphs from a report into an email, pull the question text out of a question paper, quote a clause from an agreement, or feed some content into another document without retyping it line by line. GoPDFGo's PDF to Text tool reads the text layer of your PDF and hands it back to you as clean, copyable plain text. You can copy it with one tap or download it as a .txt file. It runs entirely in your browser — your PDF is never uploaded to any server, which matters when you're pulling text out of contracts, statements, or anything with personal details. One honest limitation: this works on PDFs that actually contain real text (the kind where you can already select words with your cursor). If your PDF is a scanned image — a photo of a page saved as a PDF — there is no text layer to read, and you'll need OCR instead, which is a different kind of tool.
Why Extract PDF Text in Your Browser?
Keeps Your Reading Order
We don't just dump characters. The tool follows the layout of each page — line by line, page by page — so the text you get back reads in roughly the same order you see on screen, with page breaks marked clearly.
100% Private, No Upload
The extraction happens on your own device using your browser's PDF engine. Your file never leaves your laptop or phone, so even sensitive documents like offer letters or statements stay completely yours.
Copy or Download
Once the text is out, grab it however you like — hit Copy to drop it straight into WhatsApp, Word, or an email, or download it as a .txt file to keep or edit later.
When You Need the Text Out of a PDF
Students & Researchers: Pull quotes, definitions, or references out of e-books and papers without retyping a single line.
Office Work: Copy a clause from a contract, a paragraph from a report, or figures from a statement into your own document in seconds.
Question Papers & Notes: Get the text out of a PDF question paper or notes so you can reformat, translate, or share it.
Feeding Other Tools: Need the raw text to paste into a translator, a summarizer, or a word counter? Extract it here first, cleanly.
How to Convert PDF to Text Online
Upload your PDF: Drag and drop the file or tap to select it. It stays on your device.
Extract: Click the button and the tool reads the text layer of every page.
Copy or Download: Read the extracted text on screen, tap Copy to grab it all, or download it as a .txt file.
Scanned file? If nothing comes out, your PDF is a scanned image with no text layer — you'll need an OCR tool for that.
PDF to Text FAQs
Why did I get no text / empty result?
Your PDF is almost certainly a scanned document — basically a picture of a page. There's no real text inside it to extract, only an image. Reading text from a picture needs OCR, which is a separate technology from plain text extraction.
Does the formatting (bold, tables, columns) come through?
No. This gives you plain text only — no fonts, colours, bold, or table grids. Complex multi-column layouts may also come out in an unexpected order, because PDFs don't always store text the way it looks. It's meant for getting the words out, not recreating the design.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
Never. The whole process runs inside your browser using your device's own power. Your file is never sent to us or any server, so it's safe for private documents.
Can I extract text from a password-protected PDF?
Remove the password first using our Unlock PDF tool (if you know the password), then run the unlocked file through this tool.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. It works in Chrome, Safari, and other modern browsers on Android and iPhone — no app to install.
