Open any PDF's properties panel and you will find a small block of information nobody meant to publish: a Title that is still the filename from someone's desktop, an Author field with a full name, and a Creator or Producer line naming the exact software — sometimes down to a licensed copy registered to a company. None of it is visible on the page. All of it travels with the file. When you email a resume, upload an agreement to a portal, or send a quotation to a client, that block goes along for the ride. Check that you cleared the Producer field itself and not only Creator — they are two different entries and PDFs often fill both. If you cleared it and the value has genuinely come back, the file was probably re-saved afterwards by another PDF app, since most of them stamp their own Producer on the way out. Clean it last, right before you send it.
My PDF shows no metadata at all
That is a good outcome, not a failure. Plenty of PDFs — especially ones already exported by privacy-conscious software or previously cleaned — carry no Info entries. The tool says so plainly, and you can still type values in if you want to add a proper title.
The tool refuses my file and mentions a password

I cleared the dates but my computer still shows a date
Your file manager shows the date the file was saved to your disk, which every file has and no PDF tool can change. What this removes is the date recorded inside the document, which is the one that travels with the file when you send it.

When Hidden PDF Details Matter
Sending a resume or portfolio: Recruiters open the properties panel more often than candidates expect. Clear an Author field holding someone else's name, a Title that is still an old filename, and a Producer line naming software you no longer use.
Sharing agreements and quotations: A contract exported from your firm's licensed suite can name that licence in its Producer field. Clear it before the document goes to a client, a counterparty or a portal.
Publishing a document on a website: Anything you put up for download carries its metadata to every visitor who saves it. Give it a clean, deliberate Title and remove the rest.
Cleaning documents from someone else: A PDF forwarded to you can still carry the original sender's name and machine details. Strip them before you pass it on.
How to Remove Metadata From a PDF

PDF Metadata FAQs
What exactly is PDF metadata?
A small block of information stored inside the file, separate from the pages you see. It holds a Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator (the application you wrote the document in) and Producer (the engine that wrote the PDF), plus the dates the file was created and last changed. Your PDF reader shows it under File, Properties or Document Properties.
Does removing metadata change how the document looks?
No. The pages, text, images, fonts, form fields and page order are all untouched — only that small information block at the end of the file is rewritten. The file size barely moves, usually by a few dozen bytes.
Is the data actually gone, or just hidden?
Gone. When you leave a field empty, the entry is deleted from the file rather than saved as an empty value, so there is nothing left in the bytes for a viewer or a script to read back. That is a real distinction: a great many tools simply overwrite the value with a blank, which still leaves the entry sitting in the document.
Can I edit the fields instead of clearing them?
Yes, and it is often the better choice. Type a proper document title so it appears in a reader's tab and in search results, keep your own name in Author if you want the credit, and clear only the lines that name your software or your machine. The tool writes exactly what you type.
Why can't it open my password-protected PDF?

Does this remove hidden text or tracked changes from the pages?
No, and it is worth being clear about the limit. This works on the document's information block, not on the page content.
